You might want to try installing the DivX codec
(www.divx.com). Latest version is 5.x I think. I had
problems with AVI files not playing at all (not even
sound), and installing the DivX codec solved my problem.

I am having the same problem on my win 2k machine.
I have installed the latested codec from divx and I still can't.

These are avi's that I created using my Canon PowerShot. But I also
have problems with other avi files. It is so frustrating. I can't
seem to figure it out.

NO Video, only Sound.

Any ideas?

It usually means you still don't have the correct video CODEC installed. See which CODEC Canon PowerShot uses and then simply install it onto the machine you're playing those AVIs on.
