Here is some more information.
Windows Media Player 9 is the default player for avi files.
The crash occurs when the mouse hovers over the avi file in Explorer, just
before the popup appears giving you the file type,size, date created. This
is that small white box that appears next to the arrow when it's placed over
a file in Explorer. This popup doesn't appear when held over avi files and
instead explorer crashes.
It occurs on about 60% of avi files.
I've got an ATI Radeon graphics card and am using the official ATI catalyst
driver. Its not the very latest version but is only about a month or so old.
I've found 2 references to the exact same error using Google. But no good
responses were given.:-

The ati files that cause the crash are not corrupt and play fine in Media
Player. To play them I cant access them using explorer because they crash it
so I have to open Media Player then open them from there.
