.avi file problems

Hi All

Has anyone else experienced this problem; if so what can be done?

If I click on certain .avi files or even highlight them, then the folder
they are in dissapears to reveal the desktop with no icons or anything on it
for a few seconds. It then refreshes itself without some taskbar icons
missing.

I customized the folder this problematic avi was in to be better for movie
files, and that made it worse were as soon as you opened the folder the
dissapering trick happens straight away without touching the avi file
inside!!

I have K-light codec pack on my system, and also tried opening the file with
crystal player / windows media / vlc player / winamp to name a few, but all
gave the same result.

Try deleting this AVI Handler registry key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}

Open the the Run box and enter:

reg delete HKCR\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}

Restart your computer.

If that doesn't fix it you can restore the key by creating then
merging this registry file:

1. Copy below and paste into Notepad.

----------copy inside only----------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}]
@="Avi Properties Handler"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}\InProcServer32]
@=hex(2):25,00,53,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,52,00,6f,00,6f,00,74,00,25,\
00,5c,00,73,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,33,00,32,00,5c,00,73,00,68,00,\
6d,00,65,00,64,00,69,00,61,00,2e,00,64,00,6c,00,6c,00,00,00
"ThreadingModel"="Both"

----------copy inside only----------

2. Save-as AVI_Handler.reg (or any name + .reg)

3. Double-click or right-click and merge into the registry.

That's too bad. Enter this search string and try some of the tips that you find:

explorer crash avi

Thanks for the string Ju.c . I couldn't put it into words in google quite as
well as yours.

As it happened I'd read a few tweaks for the registry, but I went with
unloading K-Lite codec pack and that sorted it out. All my numerous media
players work, sound and vision so I've not bothered reinstalling K-Light,
although I think it wouldn't interfere again if I did, as it may have had a
broken codec that may well be fixed upon re-installation.

Once again thanks to all who replied.

As well as the K-Lite Codec Pack there is the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack, you
might try that.
