Is divx "nosy" i.e. spyware? Any appreciable overhead compared to WMP etc.?

Not as far as I am aware.

If the user downloads the player he/she can choose to install just the AVI
plugin for Media Player, if they wish. I would suggest the webplayer & the codec

FFDSHOW will allow you to play AVIs encoded in any of a number of different
codecs, including DivX, within Media Player or MCE. MP4 files, OGM, MKV
extensions, subtitles and multiple audio tracks are also supported by
FFDSHOW but some 3rd party players like "Media Player Classic" are set up to
handle track selection better in these files.
