.... it has detected another AV package. I have no idea what the other
package is. I did remove Norton Security Scan yesterday via the Control
Panel Add/Remove. As far as I know there are no other AV programs. How would
I know? AVG didn't give me a clue.

Removing Norton via Add/Remove Programs is insufficient.

Run Norton's removal tool, reboot, then try to install AVG (or even better
Avira's AntiVir). You *may* have to re-install Norton prior using its
removal tool.

The Norton Removal Tool uninstalls all Norton
2009/2008/2007/2006/2005/2004/2003 products, Norton 360 and Norton
SystemWorks 12.0 from your computer.

Good luck

You might need to remove the last vestiges of the Norton software:

After you've run the Norton Removal Tool, try to install AVG again and
update this thread with your progress.

Best wishes,

Pete

Thanks for the tip.
I hope I don't have to re-install Norton. I don't have the Norton Security
Scan. I had been using some other form of Norton, which had expired over a
year ago. NSS got installed when I fired up Norton again, and it installed NSS.

My question here is what should I choose from the list? I'm not sure which
year was associated with the Norton s/w I had. Note my response to the
fellow about you about the Norton Security Scan 'replacement'. Ah, I see I
had NAV 2007. I just found the container. Anyway, I'll wait for a response.

As I recall NAV 2007 burped on me once, and I disabled it. That was around
the time we were getting DSL, and I had no interest in using it any longer
anyway.

Great. I see I need my Norton account to get the download. I can't get to it
from the Norton s/w, since it's gone. Well, I'll look around the Norton site.

What does the (free?) version of Avira have that the free version of AVG
doesn't?

Good. Thanks. I've now installed AVG. BTW, when I got to their account site,
I had to use my e-mail to have them send me either my password or
acknowledgment that I existed. Never got a reply. Gads. Did it twice.

I see various icons, Anti-virus, License, Anti-spyware, etc., as Active. I
hope that just means they are there but not doing anything yet until I tell
them to become engage in what they do. I see no way to turn them on. Help
isn't helping. How do I enable/disable them?

It's much less bloated.

The AVG statuses are there to show you "what" is running. You are
able to right-click on the individual options in order to set them
either enable/disabled.

Do not turn off the License module. AVG requires a "license" to
work. You are granted a "free" license and you can register or not.
