I am looking for the location of the AVG virus vault
in case I need to get at it when I cant boot.

C:\$AVG8.VAULT$ is a hidden directory.

Apart from my failed attempt at humor. If you couldn't boot your computer...how would you access the 'vault' even if you knew where it was?
