AVG Update - Why Huge File?

I just installed AVG, and the automatic update kicked in. It's loading a
5MB update file! Normally I just use F-Prot and the updates are miniscule
in comparison. What could possibly account for such a large file? Thnx.

The AVG Free edition by itself is over a year old, so it has to have a large
update after installation.
You should get a Priority Update and lesser updates. The 5M Priority update
seems to also take care of some of the lesser updates.

I don't think that's the reason. I've been updating AVG all along, and
even I'm getting a 5MB update. Normally they're less than 200k. It
must be something else.

I've used AVG for years. Until recently. It really started screwing with my
files so that I had to get rid of it. Any good alternatives?

That's ridiculous.

Normally they're less than 200k.

That's about what the F-Prot updates are, and I've waited as long as a
year before updating (yeah I know, shame on me.)

I agree, and I wish I knew what it was bc I can't afford such large
updates with my limited disk space and slow connections.

Hello.

That is normal for the first time.

After you installed it it Downloads the Complete Virus Database and
tells ou to Download all other Updates, normally Three (Two Big and
one not so Big). after that it only Downloads the Updates for the
Database and sometimes Security Updates That are bigger ones (in the
last six Months three times).

Till then,

AVG use a "diff" file for it's updates; updates based on just the file
diffrences from the curent versions you have installed. This is both a
fast and cheap to do updates...

When AVG goes online to check for recent patch it first checks for the
first valid update for your version, which in most case is a 200K file.

But if you haven't updted for a while, or if there's been a "rash" of
quick updates over a short time (last 36 hours), then AVG has to use
the "last good" patch (that 5MB file) because there are no avaliable
diffrence file for your current version.

Personally, I suspect that the 5Mb updates are when it needs to update the
hueristic rules, as opposed to the virus signatures. The "last good" version
can be as large as 19Mb when the software has been updated.
