AVG Picked up the Trojan Horse Dialer.9.N.

Spybot and Ad-aware picked up nothing.

Any comments?

Yes Briefly:

AVG is an Anti-virus program that will on occasion detect trojans and
other assorted malware.

Spybot Search and Destroy is a spyware detector/remover.

Ad-Aware is an adware detector/remover.

Check your various programs web sites and/or help files for more
information on what they may or may not do/detect/monitor/remove/etc.

Don't expect any of them to save your data if you're not careful and
practice safe hex.

Sure. Spybot (S&D) does Spyware (mostly adware/spyware) and Ad-Aware
does same thing (one may catch what other may miss) and Trojan Horse Dialer.9.N is
neither of these. AVG did good to detect this but don't blame the others for missing. Some
AV proggies don't even attempt to detect any trojans.

Was that the free or the pro version of AVG? (or does it even matter?)

Dunno whether it matters though!

KAV and McAfee are the best. Several av products are quite good at
detecting Trojans. Better than most anti-Trojan scanners.

If the trojan is a virus then AV should detect it. If it is not a virus or worm type trojan then
you would may fair better with trojan detector like The Cleaner or TauScan among others
(are they still around?) . Adware/trojan or adware/spyware is best attacked by the ones
mentioned in the subject line "HiJack This" is good for seeing whatever may be installed
without your knowing and personal firewall can help alert you to outgoing connections.

Most popular AV proggies detect the more popular trojans even if they are not self-replicating
malware trojans. Don't expect them to deal with adware/spyware/trojans though (but some will
deal with some of them). It is best to have a good AV (such as ones "null" has mentioned) and
also some more geared toward trojans themselves. Kaspersky has optional defs for what
might not be actual malware and this may be a trend for AV cause people expect AV to do
all unwanted program detections.
