AVG 7.5 Pro seems to want its users to use the Resident Shield and the
icon changes colors if turned off. I've usually avoided background
virus scanners because they slow the computer down. But computers
have gotten faster with more memory.

Any opinions on Resident Shield? Does it slow the computer down?

Well, it will use cpu cycles which may be apparent. In other words you may
notice some slowdown depending on how fast the computer is, but that's the
trade-off for real-time protection. Since you already have it installed why
not just try it and see?

I was noticing slower computer activity, but I'm not sure if that was
it for sure. It seems that the latest update of AVG Pro is more picky
about resident shield being used. Several months ago I experimented
with resident shield, but it was slowing things up enough for me to
stop using it. I trust my surfing habits enough. But when I had a
friend use my computer, I would run it because I always came home to
spyware and malware that I had to remove.

AVG is one of the least intrusive anti-virus programs.
Slowdown isn't apparent AFAIK.

If you want to go for a reliable freeware virus scanner, go for either
Antivir Personal Edition classic or Avast. AVG's detection rate is
always lesser than Antivir or Avast.

Actually AVS (Active Virus Shield), a free offering from AOL which is a
basic version of Kaspersky Antivirus is a great option - small
footprint, excellent detection rate as you'd expect from Kaspersky.

Antivirs updates are just too darn big for a dialup (up to 2MB
a day). Its what killed f-prot.
