I have the latest version of AVG. I can not find any way to change
the settings to suit my needs. I want it to ASK ME before it changes
or deletes files. I just ran a scan, and it changed one of my
registry files back to what it was before. It said the file was
changed. YES IT WAS. I just cleaned the registry and did not do so
for AVG to **** it up again. If it had the option to ask first, I
would have selected NO.

Then it deleted a file that it deems to be bad. The file is a hack,
and it does absolutely nothing to harm the computer. I have had this
file installed for many years. I know for fact that it's harmless.
If AVG has asked me, I would have selected DO NOT DELETE, and SKIP
this file in the future. However AVG just went ahead and deleted both
the installed file, and the zipped download file which was stored in
my download directory, where I store all downloads which are installed
on the computer. AVG insisted this file is a trojan horse, I know
it's not.

Does AVG just go ahead and do anything it damn well pleases, without
asking first? I surely can not find any way "settings" to change
this. If AVG is the tupe of program that does not allow user input,
then it's worse than most viruses. For all I know, it could detect a
virus, or what it considers to be a virus, and delete windows. If
there is no way to change this, AVG is history on this computer. I
absolutely hate ALL programs that modify my computer without asking
me.

You mean free version?

If so, guess you need to uncheck:

"Scan files without interruption - the test will run without
interruption until completed; the test will not pause to inform you of
the detection of viruses. Removal, if required, can be performed after
the test is completed. If the checkbox is not selected, and a virus is
detected, a dialog will appear asking what action to take and the scan
will resume after you respond to the dialog, or after the dialog timeout
(usually 30 seconds).

Automatically heal infected files - infected files will (if possible) be
healed immediately after the test is completed. Of course, it is also
possible to heal infected files later from within the Test Result dialog
window."

You can also remove various areas of Windows from scanning at all, such
as registry, system dll's, etc.

There's your problem. Spend $25.00 and get a real anti-virus program.
Probably spent $1,500 on a computer but spending a few dollars on a real
anti-virus program would bankrupt him.

Try Launch Control Center>Test Center>Tests (at the top)>User Test
Settings

That's where it is on the paid version.
