AVG Free 8.0 Question (E-mail)

Hi folks,

I removed Norton last week and installed AVG Anti-Virus Free 8.0 .
However, I just noticed that when I opened it up and checked under "E-
mail Scanner" that "Total E-mails Scanned" was 0, despite regular use
(dozens of e-mails sent and received) of my Outlook Express over these
few days. It says that there is no client installed. Do I need one for
Outlook Express?

I chose the standard installation and didn't got for the custom one.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Dave

That is debatable.

In the window where you found "Total E-mails Scanned", are the boxes at the
bottom ticked?
i.e. Scan Incoming and Outgoing messages

Yes, there are three boxes at the bottom. All are checked.

When I go into Advanced Settings -> Email Scanner -> Servers and look
at the POP3 and SMTP settings, they seem all generic, and nothing to
do with my Email settings. Is this correct?? POP3 Server Name is
"AutoPop3", etc, etc.

Mine are the same and I too used standard installation.
Email scanning works for me.
Suggest you go to the AVG forum http://freeforum.avg.com/

As a security measure, never ever chose 'standard' installation especially
when it comes to (free) 3rd party software applications!

You never know what the software manufacturer might slip in to the
'standard' installation process!

So, if you want to stick with AVG, uninstall then re-install!

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition
http://free.grisoft.com/
(*Choose custom install and untick the email scanner plugin.*)

If you really want to scan e-mail then don't untick (uncheck) the email
scanner plugin.

BTW, did I mention that AntiVir is better :-)

I think I just had one of those "A-ha" moments...

Sorry, but I forgot to mention that I am using Gmail exclusively with
my Outlook Express client. Seems as if I have some fiddling to do:

http://www.grisoft.com/ca-en.faq.num-891#faq_891

Will give this a good try and see what happens.

Why don't you move to WLM; It's more stable and secure - I think :-).

Gmail server access requires configuration at the Gmail site to prepare the
account for use with mail clients. After that has been done, you have to
configure the outgoing server using port 465 with SSL (Windows Live Mail
fails when trying to use port 587 with STARTTLS; a bug carried over from MS
Outlook Express where STARTTLS only works with port 25; but Gmail doesn't
use port 25 for outgoing email). Incoming should be either port 995 with
SSL (for POP3 access), or port 993 with SSL (for IMAP access).
