AVG causing Explorer illegal operations?

IEXPLORE has performed an illegal operation...

I am plagued with this error message popping up all the time. If I click on
"details" I get:
IEXPLORE caused an invalid page fault in
module KERNEL32.DLL at 0167:bff87ede.

The window with the error message won't shut down if I click on close (or
perhaps it does but it reappears again immediately in the centre of the
screen).

The error seems to occur when I close an Internet Explorer window.

I've searched for this problem on the Microsoft site and they say it is
caused by McAfee anti virus software. I don't have McAfee, only AVG (updated
regularly). I tried shutting AVG down which didn't help. I rebooted and shut
down AVG again but this time I did ctrl alt del and shut down the program
avgserv9 and the problem seemed to go away.

Has anyone else found this problem? Is there a work around? I don't want to
run without antivirus software but this problem is really getting on my
nerves.

What other free AV software would you recommend?

I'm running Win 98 SE

Regards
John

I am using AVG and never had a problem with it other than the slow or
failing update downloads lately.

These failures are caused by "malware" some call "spyware" or "adware."
Download and update through their on line update functions SpyBot Search and
Destroy and Ad-Aware.

I've now found that if I let AVG start up normally at bootup and then do
ctrl alt del and shut down avgserv9 the problem goes away but AVG still
appears to be running normally. So is it still protecting me? If so, then
what does the avgserv9 program do?
