I have Windows XP Media Center Edition and have just downloaded &
installed AVG Vsn 8.5 free anti virus program.
Installation appears to be successful and the original computer scan
by the program was completed successfully.

However, when I attempt to update for new anti virus definitions, I
get error message UPDATE FAILED, connection with update server failed.

I am able to connect onto the internet and also onto AVG site on the
internet.

Has anyone received this error message and been able to update the
definitions? If so, what was done to do this sucessfully.?

best, Aaron

Maybe your firewall is blocking access to the update site. I use AVG Free
Edition 8.5 and update up to a few times a day manually.
I am using Windows Firewall (XP Home Edition SP3). Try opening a command
window and "ping" the update site.

I run Avg and have that situation a few times. I find that a little
patience and another attempt at downloading leads to success with AVG. It's
not perfect, but it is free.

It's common with the AVG servers. Try again later.
