I am running windows xp. I have successfully used AVG
free anti virus software for several years with windows
ME. Every time I try to run it, my system freezes. Can
anyone help me resolve this?

Get the latest version from the AVG website. Uninstall the old version
before installing the updated version. Works fine on XP here.
