Dear NG:

There was another thread discussing AVG 7 but it had digressed to the point
of AOL's stock price.

I installed AVG 6 and liked it a lot for it loaded quickly and there was no
noticeable drag on the system.

McAfee 7 would lock up a start-up for over a minute and NAV gave quirky
results (random program crashes)

Anyway AVG released version 7, installed it, and it was OK, but I later
uninstalled it for AVG seems to be following in the footsteps of their
competition by adding the "Hand holding" programs to make it another "Anti
Virus Program for Dummies."

Task manager revealed 2 processes running under version 6 but 4 processes
running under version 7. Probably auto update and some other nonsense.

From what I could find, I couldn't choose to prevent these processes from
loading when the program started. (I'd rather be able to choose.)

I'm all for improving performance and reliability but these utility programs
are trying to be all things to all people.

All I want is a simple AV program that won't crash or drag down my machine.
No frills, no hand holding.

Back to version 6.

So, having tried v7.0, is it also free like v6.0?

No, v7.0 is not free although you can try it free for the usual 60 days. I
tried v.7 yesterday and downloaded 6.0 this morning. So far, I actually
prefer 6.0 because on this old, antiquated Win98 system of mine it's not
slowing things down as much. In fact, so far I haven't noticed any
appreciable impact at all. But v.7 which slowed my system down as much as
McAfee did, definitely had more features, was more fun to play with, almost
to the point of being confusing. I agree with the other poster about eTrust
EZ, another great product with very little impact on my old system. But in
order to indifinitely disable it, not just "Snooze" it, you must completely
reboot your system, plus it does not scan email. But I like both AVG6.0 and
eTrust EZ, will be hard to chooze between the two. Good luck.
