I tried to get the update for the free version of AVG and instead got a
non-english 404 page written by AVG. What is with that?

I however am still getting that 404 page written, I believe, in the native
tongue of the providers of AVG.

Get a better anti-virus software, something that can handle the update
process automatically without you even being near the computer. I have
used F-Secure Anti-Virus <URL:http://www.f-secure.com/> for 7 yrs now.
It has always worked like a charm, never had to fiddle with it doing
things manually. It scans full system in the middle of the night when
I'm sleeping, provides background protection and sometimes complains
to me about worms/macroviruses. They also provide alert service for my
cellphone, SMS text messages like "F-Secure level 1 security alert,
Sobig.F worm is spreading at a rapid rate.". When returning back to my
computer I noticed that F-Secure's automatic BackWeb update had already
downloaded protection for Sobig.F and did an extra scan to make sure
that my system is not infected with it... And take a look at their web
page in the URL above, it provides full story how they co-operated with
FBI to stop the Sobig.F from doing more damage.

Funny that, we use F-Secure on our corporate network and I've never known it
to manage to disinfect anything. It finds things, sure enough but then
doesn't do anything about it. And do you really want an sms messages from
you av program??

F-Secure Anti-Virus Total Suite

F-Secure Radar
http://www.f-secure.com/products/radar/index.shtml

Supported Devices: Phone,Fax,Pager,Mobile Phone,Email,SMS

I wan't to be informed _immediately_ when there is a serious threat to
the system I need to keep up and running. It can be only few seconds in
between "nothings wrong" or "everything is f*ucked up" situations...

F-Secure has 24h/7d response teams ready. These guys know what they are
doing, they are those guys who discovered Sobig.F phase 2 and stopped
it by co-operating with the FBI...

Btw, my cellphone also has F-Secure Anti-Virus installed:
