I got a new computer with XP pro. I want to continue to use a drive called
the Shark 250, by an out-of business company, Avatar. It works via parallel
port, and did fine with my Win98 machine. I am having trouble getting XP to
see it when I try to install it. I had to put a PCI card with a second
parallel port on the motherboard, since my motherboard only had one
parallel. When I connect the drive to that parallel port, and turn on the
machine, XP does not see new hardware. If I go to the Add New Hardware
under Control Panel, I cannot make XP see the drive. I confirmed under
Device Manager that the parallel port is working properly, and I got the
latest driver from the manufacturer to cover that base. I have tried every
combination of cable, BIOS setting, and anything else I can think of, but I
cannot get XP to recognize the drive. I have checked a couple web sites
which indicate other people have been successful in getting the Shark Drive
to work under XP, so I would like to ask for suggestions on how I can make
it work on this machine.

Is this a simple (one way) parallel port or two way ECP port. Look in BIOS
for parallel port setup and make it ECP and use MB's port for HD.

Thanks for the quick response. The parallel ports are set up as ECP,
bidirectional. I have to use the motherboard parallel port for my HP
printer, it will not work with the others.

In the device manager under the parallel port did you enable legacy P&P
devices? I had to do that to get my parallel port LS 120 drive to work.

another way to enable it?

XP does not support hardware the way DOS based Windows did,
you may not be able to make it work, the nice thing is that
new USB external cases can fit your old drive (if it is IDE)
or you can just buy a new USB 2.0 external drive, which are
now very much less expensive.
