After reading a favorable review of Avast from this group, I downloaded and
attempted to install it. I was greeted with the curse of Bill Gates message:

Avast requires Internet Explorer 4 or higher.

I was sufficiently irritated to see Gates winning again I wrote the folks at
Avast to complain. In sum - Why make us use more Microsoft products, especially
its browser which is like a come on to becoming dependent on other Microsoft
products --- in order to use an independent, freeware product?

They wrote me back, not at all sorry: Other developers write software
dependent on Microsoft dills and products (True, e.g., the infamous html help
files). And they dislike IE, as I do. I do not have to use IE, just install its
bloated components on my machine, so I can use Avast and things like it.

I do not understand why so many developers want to help make the
winblows environment so dependent on Microsoft. I guess I must
eventually become another Linux user. -- But wait - I heard Gates
talking about his big new blockbuster product, Longhorn. Why am I
suspecting it is an MS version of windows based on their own Unix kernel?

I completely agree that products shouldn't be dependent on IE. I use
Mozilla Firefox and I look down upon webmasters that do not support this
browser, which in my opinion is the best browser there is. Internet
Explorer has incorrect support for HTML and terrible CSS support. For
an example check out this webpage and try changing the layout to "Two
columns, Menu" in IE.

Although IE is a terrible browser many software packages have to use a
browser or parts of a browser for something in their software. The only
other alternative to using IE (which is installed by default on all
Windows machines) is to include their own browser in the software which
would bloat the size of the software and could take time to make.

By the way, howard, if you are looking to get into Linux you might want
to try Mandrake. I believe it is one of the best systems for people
moving from Windows.

We do live in a Windows world. I am trying to make my site appeal to

My browser is Mozilla (Firebird or Firefox or Mozilla 1.6) and mail
program is Mozilla. I leave IE installed as it is needed for Windows
updates and a very few other special situations, but I NEVER use it as a
browser .... and I use and love Avast. It is a great anti-virus
solution and replaced Norton on my PC. Perhaps Avast uses some of the
same dll as does IE, but it does not directly use the IE browser.
