Hi, Can't seem to figure out Avast. I want to start avast to scan local
files and come back and have the job done but it stops to let me know I have
a virus (which I know it isn't) then I have to click continue which wastes a
lot of time. Also on the continue dialogue box it says do not display
further. How can I permanently stop it stopping till the end?

Right click the Avast icon in the systray. Select 'Program settings' >
'Confirmations' and UNcheck the options you don't want.

There is also an 'Exclusions' option where a given file can be excluded from
being scanned.

Alternatively, start the Simple User Interface and schedule a boot-time scan.
Under 'Advanced options' select 'Move infected file to Chest' and re-boot.

Thanks but which option do I select in confirmations?

Well, I don't know exactly what is giving you trouble so I would uncheck the
options one at a time and see if the problem goes away. You can scan an
individual file or folder quite easily so exploring the options shouldn't take
very long.

It might be easier though to just add the file that contains "a virus (which I
know it isn't)" to the exclusion list if you want that file skipped. This can
be dangerous since since the warning may _not_ be a false positive. If I
suspect a FP I can always send the file to Avast to be checked out.

My preferred method is to use the boot-time scan with the suspicious files
going to the Virus Chest. I do this about once per month.

There is a good forum at <http://forum.avast.com/>. It's easy to search and
may provide better answers that you can find in a news group. Free
registration is required if you want to post to the forum.

Just a guess, but try this: Right click Avast system tray icon. Click
"Program Settings". On the "Common" page, is "Exit Explorer Extension
when first virus is found" checked? If so, uncheck, try the scan
again.
