I hope this isn't too far OT, but the help might be here!

I've been using Avant browser, and all the history has disappeared; I may
have accidentally have cleared it, but I can't make it start again, and I
like to have recent history for backtracking.

I instyalled the latest beta version, but have uninstalled and gone back to
the standard version.

AFACS I have not got it set to clear on exit, anyhow it's not even there
for one seeion.

I've checked IE settings and all seemed ok.

This may have happened when dreamweaver kept crashing, needing cold boots,
and then I found myself with password problems, stopping me getting into
ftp and ngs, but I've cleared those.

Can anyone help please - I really like my recent history to go back to
those sites I shouildn't have left so quickly.

Thank you for the answer, Steven, but it didn't find it.

I think the problem may not be in Avant, brcause IE is exactly the same.

Is it possible that there's an Internet setting in 98SE I've messed up.

Apologies for using your indulgence, but I'm frantically busy with some
community work (and some homework for me wrinklies college) needed for
Monday, and as ever, it's taking 5 times as long as I thought, and I
really miss History.

It doesn't even record this session's history.

I've uninstalled it, gone back to version 9, comletely uninstalled, and
erased every trace I could find, including registry, reinstalled beta,
and still it's the same.

I've checked Index.dat and deleted Run.bat, just in case.

Nuffing; the real answer is prabably real simple, but I can't suss it

In the Startmenu's Run box, type:

inetcpl.cpl

(Same effect, btw, as looking in your control panel for the MSIE settings
applet which there asserts to be called "Internet Options.")

The first tab that shows, the General tab, it has "Days to Keep Pages in
History." Have you double-checked that?

I don't need an app - it's right there in IE and Avant (or used to be)

I've got the feeling I've buggered up something really simple, and I'm
going to feel a right wally if I ever sort it out.

The command didn't work, but I have checked the box, and changed it in the
hope it would ovewrite something, but no joy.

And it doesn't even keep today's history, which would help.

I'm looking at a usenet post on the subject:

http://groups.google.com/groups?selm...&output=gplain

(1) Mcafee

You don't seem like the type to run a brand like Mcafee. But just to mention:

: "If you have MacAfee: turn off the ActiveX part of McAfee's Internet Filter ..."

You know, that does bring up one question. Are there any other "security" products,
besides Mcafee, which similarly have that effect of breaking mise history?

(2) Registry

Next thing the author of that post brings up are two reg keys to check. My instincts
are that the problem/solution won't be found with this, but I'll still go ahead and
report where he said to look:

A. [HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
"Save_Session_History_On_Exit"="yes"

B. [HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\TypedURLs]

The second thing is for that "auto-complete" feature of the address bar, not history,
so really, I don't see why he brought it up.

On my system, I might be inclined to take a look to see that the paths in my registry
for msie folders correspond to my expectations. Values under these keys:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders]

(3) Corrupted history folder/files

It's the last thing he brings up which feels right:

: "It could be that they History folder has become damaged or corrupted, ..."

Then he says to delete the history and the cache.

Up-thread, I see that you are already running Index.dat Suite. I don't know why
it would make a difference if you were to delete entire folders, instead of only
the index.dat files; but I suggest you might go ahead and do that. It should make
you feel better at least, even if it doesn't fix.

Right after Index.dat gives you the run.bat file, add a couple of lines.

Add a deltree/y for the history folder and for the cache folder.
Then at the end of that file, add a MD for those same two folders.

I'd write the above literally, but I don't know your paths. If they're default
which I -think- on w98se is immediate subfolders off the windows directory,
then I guess I could have copy-pasted the right lines. But you can get your
correct paths, when viewing your Index.dat Suite run.bat file. Or even, maybe
someone might feel inclined to write clearer instructions....

I wanted to add. When I want to look at what is truly going on with weirdo
folders such as those, I like to run winfile.exe. Let's you quickly see all
hidden things. (Make sure to set winfile preferences. Under View > By File
Type > [x] Show Hidden/System Files.)

Speaking of weird folders. I'd also wonder if the msie active-X folder
might have some nasty, or corrupt, visitor hiding out in there. I'm thinking
the default name of that folder is something like "Downloaded Program Files" ?
My way would be to take a peek there with winfile first. If something suspicious,
folks would probably suggest some product, Spybot or whomever, to handle the
matter...

I've just reinstalled Firefox, and it's imported all the history Avant
and IE is missing

Thanks for the winfile info - I didn't know about that, and it shows the
history, which Explorer didn't, anfd it shows each session as index.dat
files. which of course is a format I don't understand, but they're
there, and Firefox found them.

Go to Firefox? Like a shot when it's anywhere near good as Avant!

I had "no" god knows why; but Ive just run IE and it's made no
difference - is a reboot required

I don't really know what to make of these, except that History is in
Shellfolders but not in Currentuser shellfolders

I'll take that on advisement - it sounds a bit severe for this muppet!

First I'm going to try a reinstall of IE6, if it will let me, I've
already tried IE repair with no luck.

I'm sorry to make such a fuss about this! It's really more short term
history, like where was that site I went to yesterday? (My own internal
write only memory won't go back farther than that, but I do appreciate
your help
