available RAM

I am new to win xp. My 40 Gig HD is only 40% full but
system info shows my available physical memory as 35mb to
55mb when I boot up. (There is 256 installed)
Is this typical? If the RAM is being held by programs, is
there a way to release it?

I have a gig, and on boot up xp uses about 230 megs and thats with no other
apps loaded.

You are confusing hard drive space with RAM.
