I've just installed an additional 256 MB of DDR Ram in my
computer. When I was looking under system it
shows "Total Memory of 512 MB" vs "Available memory of
about 256 MB". Is this normal? Why isn't the available
memory at 512MB? Am I missing something?

Where are you pulling these figures from?
System properties will show you a total for installed memory.

The figures come from Programs/Accessories/System
Tools/System Information;

Total Physical Memory 512.00 MB
Available Physical Memory 232.12 MB

Why is available less than total?

Because some of the memory (279.88 MB) is currently in use: Windows,
startup programs, services, etc.

If you close some programs, the available amount will eventually increase.
Open more programs, it will decrease.
