Is a 2004 antivirus program better than a 2003 version with the newest virus
definition updates?

IMO, no, they are not, unless they have stated something
actually was fixed that was a problem before. For the most
part, they are all added bells & whistles you can do
without.

Since your subject is av programs in general, and not NAV in
particular, I'll interpret your question. Note that most av products
don't go by yearly designations but by version numbers.

I think McAfee in particular points out and stresses which of its
versions are no longer supported. You can find the info at their web
site. There is always a danger in using old versions without finding
out whether or not the scan engine is still effective with the current
dat or sig files. Sometimes scanner redesigns/modifications make older
versions truly obsolete. But that doesn't necessarily mean that all
older versions and scan engines are obsolete.

So you have to ask your question specifically about a particular
antivirus product and version. Check their web site and/or contact
their sales or technical support.

When you download new virus updates, doesn't your AV program now have the
coding to recognize new viruses?

What do you think yourself? It seems to me, that the new developed
products with updates are better in catching crap than older versions.

Not necessarily... It's not just signature or definition file that
have to be updated. The scanning engine itself has to be updated
periodically in order to deal with new threats. If just the
definitions are updated sooner or latter the scanner won't able to
recognize new threats ever through the code to identify them is
included in the definitions.
