The icon in the bottom RH of my screen (yellow shield with an exclamation
mark in the centre) shows that a download of an update is in progress - it
shows 36%.

That download started about 3 days ago - and there seems to be very
little modem activity.

It hasn't locked up (it was 34% this morning) but is there something I can
do about it. Clicking or rightclicking on the icon does not open the usual
box.

Personally, I keep Automatic Updates set to "Notify me but don't download or
install updates". You can do that from Control Panel/Automatic Updates. When
I receive a notification, I go to Microsoft Update at
http://update.microsoft.com/microsof....aspx?ln=en-us and
download and install the updates at a convenient time for me. Doing it that
way, the updates don't interfere with my use of the computer.

Stop the download by setting Auto Updates OFF. Reboot. Download and
install Crap Cleaner from www.ccleaner.com and run the Cleaner feature.
Reboot. Set Auto Updates to notify but not to download or install. Wait.
The yellow shield will appear. Review the updates and tell it to
download the ones you want. Once downloaded, Start, Turn off Computer
and press the Turn Off button and the updates will install out of
Windows and then the computer will automatically shut down. Turn the
computer on again. Done.
