I have been putting screen dumps into a manual and previously i could use
autoshapes to highlight certain areas of the screen. now for some reason what
a try to put a box around a menu for eg, it will not allow me to put the
autoshape over the screen dump only to the side of it??

For this type of work SnagIt www.techsmith.com makes the task child's play
(see the many examples on my web site).
As for Word - check the wrap option of your illustration.
