Autopreview blocked on SMIME messages?

Our company recently implemented SMIME. Clients use Outlook 2003 or Outlook
2007. Both note that when they receive a digitally signed or encrypted
messages, they cannot see the autopreview.

Is this by design? Or can it be "fixed"? My customers are not happy about
it...

Actually, I found the answer further down the discussion board under "Outlook
2003" - apparently this is by design. Thanks...

How safe would it be if Outlook automatically displayed the contents of
encrypted messages? Anyone standing near the recipient's screen would then
be able to read the message, but the idea of encryption is so that only the
intended recipieint can read it.

This is true. I am being told now that even digitally signed emails have the
autopreview blocked - on some computers but apparently not all. Is there a
setting we should be looking at to make autopreview available on digitally
signed (but not encrypted) messages??

I believe that it's controlled on the sender's side, if it's controllable at
all. I know that I receive signed messages and they are shown in the
Reading Pane.

The only thing I can suggest that might be applicable (and I'm not sure it
is), is Tools>Options>Security>Send clear text signed messages when sending
signed messages

Brian - through experimentation with a colleague, we believe we've uncovered
the mystery's resolution! I could see digitally signed messages in
Autopreview and I was NOT running "cached exchange mode". My colleague could
NOT see the same message and WAS running in cached exchange mode". After
turning that off, and restarting Outlook, she could also see the message in
Autopreview.

I sure hope this helps someone else along the way - this is the first time
I've used this community when help was not immediately forthcoming. It's
good to feel I'm giving something back. Brian- thanks for trying to help,
and put this little tidbit in your toolbox.

Have a great weekend!

Autopreview or Reading Pane? I use cached Exchange mode and can see signed,
unencrypted messages in the Reading Pane, but I never use Autopreview.
