my autoplay function is no longer working for my USB drives.
i didn't change any autoplay/autorun settings before it stopped working.
i did install a media player around that time, but i uninstalled it.

i already tried several things.
1. resetting autoplay settings
2. altering the autorun/autoplay settings in the registry(note: in my
registry the "nodrivetypeautorun" value is ffffffdf(hex) 4294967263(dec) and
can't be changed to the suggested value using a .reg value.)
3. the autoplay fix tool(windows says it's not responding when i select a
drive it should check)
4. i checked in tweakvi for the autoplay settings, but it's set to run
autorun with any device.

the device i'm using is a samsung U600 phone in mass storage mode,in this
mode it should be recognised as a normal USB stick with a size of 2GB.

Have you recently installed VMWare Workstation (or similar)?

By default it disables autoplay on the host machine, as it interferes with
the guest systems.

You can turn autoplay (on the host) back on by firing up VW Workstation,
go to Edit->Preferences->Devices, and uncheck the "Disable autoplay on the
host" box.

According to that link (which may be out of date), the value ffffffdf in
that regkey means AutoPlay is disabled for everything except CD-ROM drives.

Can you try changing this manually (double-click the value) to, say,
ffffffd3? That should re-enable AutoPlay for "removable" and "fixed" drives.
Reboot, and try again.

If that does not work:
- Verify your AutoPlay settings under Control Panel -> AutoPlay.
- Try opening services.msc (Start->Run... open services.msc) and skim down
the list to find "Shell Hardware Detection" or "ShellHwDetection" (can't
recall.) This service needs to be enabled ("Automatic") for AutoPlay to work.
- Try opening gpedit.msc and digging around to find AutoPlay settings -
check under Windows Components -> AutoPlay Policies. Perhaps more information
may be gleaned there, I'm not sure (sorry this is vague.)

Hope this helps!
