autonumber not working

After spending 8 hours today designing a new db, I started entering information only to find that the autonumber won't go past 1. Whether making an entry into the table or the form, it continues to say (autonumber) in the filed. I hate to scrap this whole db to spend another 4 hours or more to recreate it just to fix the autonumber. Thanks!
