I have updates set to download and notify. If I choose to not install an
update and to not be notified about it again, do the downloaded files get
deleted from my machine or are they there forever? If the latter, I'll
switch to notify but not download.

If you switch, you'll know they aren't downloaded or have to worry if
they stay on your computer forever.

The downloads will be removed eventually but not automatically.

Feel free to delete the contents of %windows%\SoftwareDistribution\Download
<=this folder any time you want.
