automatically shuts down when I click on my profile

I have an XP laptop. In boot up when I click on my profile icon to log on, it
automatically logs me off, thus preventing getting to the desktop. I tried
booting in safe mode and cannot get to the desktop that way. I tried each
option- safe mode, safe mode w/command, safe mode w/networking, even the last
known good connection. Nothing works. ~ Dan
