Somehow my XP got reconfigured so that when one window is closed
it no longer makes the last open app/window active. I get a gray bar
and have to either click on the window or alt-tab to make it active.

Can someone please point me to a fix, hopefully a quick regedit?
It's a minor but annoying problem. Thanks.

Have you tried switching away to a different Windows theme and then back
to the one you were using before?
