Hi there,
How do I configure my Internet settings such that it automatically connects
when I start my computer and disconnects when I shut down.
I used to have it to begin with, till my system crashed. FYI!! I use Windows
XP Home and have DSL connection.

Disable Wake On LAN (a setting in the BIOS). When you shut the computer down,
it will be disconnected.

Are you behind a NAT router? If not, WHY NOT??

When you shut down, what are you doing? If you power off, when you power on
later, you'll re initialise your network card.

Do you have PPPoE service? If so, you'll need to have your PPPoE agent run as a
service (ie before you login). A NAT router will do this for you, without your
having to reconfigure the computer.

Everybody here is typical users, very few real experts hang out here. Don't
sweat it.

Wake On LAN is a BIOS setting. When you boot the computer, it will say
something like:
"Control - Esc to change system settings"
In this example (and your system will almost certainly use a different key
sequence) my hitting "Ctrl - Esc" will take me to a set of screens where I can
change vital hardware settings, and Wake On LAN, if it's supported.

If you're using PPPoE Internet service, and your computer connects directly to
the DSL modem, you have a program on your computer that takes your account name
and password and passes it to the DSL modem, when the computer starts up. You
may, or may not, key this information in every time that you login.

The Windows applet Dial-up Networking may handle this for you, or your ISP may
have given you a setup CD that installed a proprietary program to do this. You
may have input your account name and password to a Dial-up Networking profile
some time ago, and have that load automatically.

If you were to get a NAT router, you could have it handle the PPPoE negotiation
for you, not require any special program on the computer, and block any Wake On
LAN commands from hackers, so if you shut down your computer, it will stay shut
down til YOU hit the power switch.

Plus, and I'm not sure if you know this, but your computer, behind a NAT router,
will be just as safe left on 7 x 24 x 56 basis for the year. The hardware will
last longer too. Turning the computer off and on is what destroys it. I have 4
computers - the oldest is at least 8 years old, and all stay on (powered up and
online) 7 x 24 x 56. No major hardware failures yet.

Also, turning your computer off is a form of Security By Obscurity. You're
subject to far more danger when you use the computer, then when it's idle.
