in powerpoint 2003 every time I try to apply a design template, powerpoint runs a virus scan on it before it puts it in. This slows things down quite a bit. Is there a way to turn off the automatic virus scanning?

You have to turn it off in your virus scanning software. Do you have
Norton? In NAV go to Options > Other > Misc and turn off the Office add-in.
