It appears some system files have been deleted and now the Automatic Updates
tab is gone. I'm trying to restore it. The problem is I had used the update
feature to get SP2 so I don't have the WinXP SP2 CD to repair it. But I do
have the Windows XP cd without the service pack. How can I use this CD to
repair this Automatic Updates tab?

Any input would be appreciated.

Have a tried a system restore to a point before the problem occurred?

Thanks for the replies.

System restore was one of the first things I checked, so that didn't work.
This recovery console, couldn't that be any use?

Even the System file checker seems useless, isn't it suppose to restore the
Windows XP to its original files with it original versions? I scan and
nothing happens. If there is a missing file, shouldn't it replace it? System
file checker is really lame or have I been unable to use this? If it actually
restores every single file to how they were when Winxp was first installed
that would really come in handy. Even better than system restore. So
shouldn't it fix that autoupdate tab as well?

How could I find the automatic update files from the cd and find them? I
think they were something like wuauclt, wuapi.dll, wucltui.dll. How can I
extract these from the Windows XP cd?

Hi Mike,

The Windows XP CD (without SP1/SP2 integration) would contain the old version of the DLLs anyway. Try one of these methods below:

1. Look for the files WUAUCPL.CPL and WUAUENG.DLL in these locations, and copy it to the Windows\System32 folder:
a) C:\Windows\System32\DllCache
b) C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 (DLLs will be present in compressed form)

2. Download and install the latest version of Windows Update ActiveX control from here:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v6...gent20-x86.exe
Restart Windows after installing the ActiveX control.

I tried what you said. Couldn't find the files on the computer. So I tried
looking on the CD. Could find it there either. But if it can install it
should be present on the CD right? The thing is I don't know in which cab
file it is. Is there a way where I can scan all cab files for a certain file
and extract it? Because similar things have happened in the pass and couldn't
extract them or find them on the CD probably because I don't know how to
search the cab files.

I tried the link you gave me and installed it. After reboot the automatic
updates tab still doesn't show, but this now it takes time to open system
properties itself. It seems to have slowed it.

There are no .CAB files in Windows XP CD. The files will be present in a compressed form, denoted by file extension containing the underscore at the end. Example "WUAUCPL.CP_"

Ramesh, I finally managed to find the files you mentioned in compress form.
However, once I click expand, even though the file is copied it stays in
compressed form (i.e WUAUENG.DL_ with underscore at the end). So I found
WUAUENG.DLL but couldn't find WUAUCPL.CPL. Could it be that the WinXP cd
(without SP1) has a different file required for that tab. What is the WUAUCPL
equilavent for WinXP (without SP1) so I can look for at the CD. Also if you
could give a list of all the necessary files required for the operation of
the automatic update feature, just in case they are corrupted partially. I
think that if I managed to find the files and copy them into system32 it will
fix it.

I also tried "control wuaucpl.cpl", nothing happened. Not even a error
message showed up. Sorry for asking many questions.

Mike,

I checked the Windows XP CD (with SP2) and found the file WUAUCPL.CP_ under the i386 folder in the CD. I believe the file name should be the same for pre-SP2 systems also.

Click Start, type the following and press ENTER:

cmd /k dir %windir%\system32\wuaucpl.cpl /s

If no such file is found, then try unzipping "WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe" (that you downloaded) it to a folder. Then open the folder where you extracted the files, and open the "en" subfolder, and copy the file "wuaucpl.cpl" to the System32 folder.
