I'd like to take advantage of scheduled installs of
critical updates from our SUS server to our Terminal
Servers running in Application Server Mode.

My question is does Windows 2000 automaticaly put the
server in to "install" mode when applying the updates?

Only user sessions can be in "install" or "execute" mode, not the whole
server. For services, such as the automatic updates, there are no
"install" or "execute" modes, so your question is not relevant and it
nothing you have to worry about.

Shain,

Install Mode is to allow each user to get their own copy of a programs INI file or registry settings, so their configuration does
not interfere with anyone elses. Since the critical updates you will be installing with Automatic Update client and SUS have
no user settings, only core system files, Install Mode is not needed.

I beg to differ. When you put the server into install
mode, the entire server is in install mode, not just that
user's session. Hence the reason why most TS books out
there recommend only doing installs when you are the only
person on the system.

While most (if not all) updates only install system or
core files and not user-related files, you can most likely
skip being in install mode when you install these
patches. These patches probably don't have user-based
registry entries, so being in install mode won't hurt
anything, although it probably isn't necessary.
