In the icons section in the lower right of the desktop, which I think
is called the Taskbar, the little yellow shield with the exclamation
point in the middle (!) has been reading "Downloading updates: 44%" for
about 30 minutes on my Toshiba notebook computer. In the past, the
number keeps climbing. Any ideas as to what's happening? Thanks.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot2

Delete the contents of CatRoot2. Reboot. Try Windows Update.
