I have a brand new Compaq V2000 with XP SP2. When I click on the automatic
updates system tray icon the "Automatic Updates" dialog pops up and says
"Initializing installation..." - then freezes.

Does anyone know what causes this and how to fix it?

Thanks. But I can d/l ok. The files are on the hard disk. It is the
installation that freezes. I didn't see this covered in your otherwise
informative FAQ.

Any more suggestions? I think an exectuable that does the update is damaged,
or something.
