Did anyone else experience the loss of saved files on the C:\ drive after the
latest updates on 6/12/08? Overngiht, the following loaded: kb950759,
kb890830, kb951698, kb950762, kb950760 and kb951376. After the automatic
reboot, my screen theme changed, icons are missing, *all* files stored in My
Documents are gone (family photos, thousands of music files and artwork,
resumes, bookmarks, etc.) and I cannot perform a System Restore to an earlier
date. I get error messages about the registry and perhaps not having
sufficient administrative privileges. The system assigns a 'temporary
profile' then finishes its launch. What puzzles me is that some of my
programs and icons are still around, but not all of the ones I used everyday!
Does anyone have any ideas?? Thanks!

The system should have created a restore point before installing the
updates.

Restore back to that point.

Take a look at the folders stored in the C:\Documents and Settings folder. You
may find your old files within one of them. Look for a folder with the same name
as your user account.

If you find your files, you might want to back them up to CD/DVD or an external
hard drive. That way, if something like this happens in the future, you won't
have to look for them.

As for trying fix the problem, you might want to logon with the built-in
Administrator account and see if your can run System Restore. How you log on
with the Administrator account depends on what version of XP you have installed
on your computer.

XP Home Edition

To logon with the built-in Administrator account in XP Home Edition you have to
restart the computer and boot into Safe Mode.
To start in Safe Mode, reboot your computer and start tapping the F8 key as soon
as you see anything displayed
on the screen.
Keep hitting F8 until the Advanced Startup Options menu appears.
Use the up and down arrow keys on your keyboard to select Safe Mode.
Hit Enter.
Click on the Administrator icon.
Unless you changed it, the password should be blank.

XP Professional
Go to Start -> Log Off and log off from your account.
If the Welcome screen is displayed, hit the Ctrl + Alt + Del key combination
twice.
This should bring up the Log on to Windows dialog.
Enter Administrator in the User Name box.
If you set up a password for this account, enter it now. Otherwise, leave the
password box blank.

Dunno. I am on dial-up, and cut short the download of IE 7 update
(KB950759). The rest of the KBs are installed now. No problems. Will
finish the IE update download tonight. Rejoin here if have similar probems.

Thank you! After posting the topic, I searched the C:\ drive and found my
files, etc. in a folder marked 'Owner'. What a relief! But at Startup the
user account logon, although marked Owner/Administrator has been reset as
though never used. I will try your suggestions to see if the Safe Mode
Startup resets it to the way it was.

Sorry - it was a very frustrating day at work, then this - ugh! Thanks again!

Why did you go for the updates? What problem were you trying to fix?

Okay - somehow the automatic updates corrupted the local profile and I was
unable to see my files, revert to an earlier system restore, etc.

By rebooting in safe mode, signing on as administrator and performing a
system restore in this safe environment I was able to fix my problems.
