Automatic update of properties fields

Word 2007. In a template, I have some fields that are tied to the document's
properties (like author, category, etc...). I would like these fields to
update automatically as I change the properties and not have to go to each
one and update it manually (right click and "update field"). How do I set
this?
Thank you,
Caroline

Not sure if this is the answer you want - but may help - Select All using
CTRL+A and then press F9

This is a good idea. I was hoping not to have to "do" anything and simply
change an option somewhere that would "tell" the fields to update
automatically as the properties were changed. I even tried saving the doc,
closing it and coming back in, but the fields still weren't updated.
This template will be used by different people and it's one more thing to
tell them to do... I wanted to make it simpler.
Anyways, if someone knows if that's possible at all, let me know!
Thanks,
Caroline

When you insert a field - you should have the option (a tick box) asking you
if you wish to "update automatically" but I believe this only works when the
document is saved, closed and reopened - therefore this would work if it were
to be closed and reopened.

Other than that - I am sure someone will be along to help you soon..

Good luck! ;-)

Unless there is some reason why you cannot do it, try using a Content
Control instead of a Field. E.g. for Author, go to Insert|Quick
Parts|Document Property|Author. The contents of these Content Controls are
coordinated automatically with a "data store" maintained in the document.

But they aren't Fields and they are new in Word 2007...

The "Update automatically" option is only available in the Date and Time
dialog box, and it simply inserts a date as a field; the date field in
itself is no more "automatic" than (most) other fields.

In Word, only a few fields actually update automatically (among them the
LISTNUM field). See these KB articles for an explanation of the rules that
apply:

Which fields are updated when you open, repaginate, or print document
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/211629/en-us

Some fields are updated while other fields are not
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/212054/en-us

Also, note that you can choose to update fields on print (in the Word
Options).
