I am using XP SP2. Automatic updates is turned on. Yesterday, the yellow
shield icon indicating that an update is ready to be installed appeared in
my system tray (beside the clock and volume control). When I clicked on it,
it indicated that Internet Explorer 7 was ready for installation.

I unchecked it as I don't like IE7 (I prefer IE6) and closed the window.
The problem is that the shield icon refuses to go away, even after shutting
down and rebooting. How do I get rid of it? Thanks in advance.

What hapen if you double click it and Select Custom install instead of the
express which will install all the updates provided or offered from windows
updates.
Uncheck the updates which you do't want and when you click Install a pop-up
box will prompt you that some updates will not selected, please check the
box for don't show this message again and click [OK] to install the security
updates which may be needed by your OS.

When you unchecked it and closed, did it ask you to ignore that update in the
future? It should.

Thank you, nass and Alec S. I failed to check the "Don't notify me of this
update again" box. The yellow shield is gone now.
