Working with a friend's laptop, I find that Start Menu programs or menus
will start almost immediately on being highlighted, without waiting for a
click. The same thing happens on most other menus. My reaction time not
being what it used to be, this is driving me nuts.

There has to be a setting capability to delay this response somewhere, but I
can't find it anywhere on my home computer or in an hour's search through the
Help/Support Center.

With many thanks in advance,

.._ ._..

Hi Al,

Tweak UI for XP has the ability to change the menu speed under "Mouse
settings". All of the XP Powertoys including Tweak UI can be found at:

If you have TweakUI installed: Look in the "Mouse" section for
"X-Mouse and disable it.

Alternatively run the registry edit here on line 171:

Hi Curt,

Many thanks for your advice which I believe will turn the trick. I'm still
puzzled that there seems to be no way to strangle the whole feature, since my
XP Home SP2 doesn't even try to start w/o a click.

Thanks, too, for picking up on the Morse signature. Actually I never worked
a Morse line, but my first job in industry was at a Western Union Electronics
Lab in the late 40s where they had telegraph keys controlling 120-volt
buzzers, with sound-powered phones wired in parallel throughout the campus.
You could key an oscillator to call anyone anywhere with a two-character code
and talk through the phones. Simple, but the buzzers (later replaced with
loudspeakers for tone signaling) would raise the dead. Replaced shortly with
loudspeakers. Crude but effective.

Bob,

thanks for the reply but I think that the "Click Items" only sets one or two
lcicks to activate.

You're very welcome Alan. Knew the Morse as I was a licensed "ham operator"
for a long time.

CD,
Thanks. That should do it. I'm still surprised that there's no such fix in
the basic XP package.

I've noticed that it seems to particularly affect laptops with the
touchpad type mouse. With those it's especially irritating,
because it's all too easy to inadvertently hover for a nanosecond
causing a program to open which you didn't want! The odd thing is
that connecting an external mouse seems to remedy the situation,
even without manually changing the x-mouse setting. Well that's
what I've found.
