The precise error message, including the filename, would be helpful. If you
could post that, please.

When was AVG installed?
Right-click on My Computer, scroll to explore. Click the + sign beside C,
then Documents and Settings. Look for your profile. Expand that and go to
Local Settings, then the Temp folder. You should find that text file there.

It's a hidden folder. To unhide hidden folders and files, try the following
steps:

Right click on My Computer
Scroll to Explore
Click on View, scroll to Details and click on that
Click on Tools, scroll to Folder Options and click on that
Click on the View tab
Click Show Hidden files and folders
Un-click Hide file extentions for known file types
Click Apply
Click Like Current Folder
Click OK

Search for the text file again.

PS did you ever send the error message to Microsoft? Often they will offer
some troubleshooting steps.

I think that you should read it if you find it.

How I would search if I were you is to use the file find function (start >
search) and type in: *appcompat.txt and search the C: drive.

Let me know what happens.

You won't find that file. It's not the problem. See this:
