Well, Windows does have the "shutdown" command that can be run as a
scheduled task or run on another machine that can network in with
administrator privilege. If it's the latter, make sure your security
logs are enabled and look in the security log for another machine
connecting/authenticating just before shutdown.
To save power, my company uses a program that powers down computers at
night and starts them up again before I get to work. It shows up as a
service named "WakeUpAgt" and/or "NightWatchman" in my services list.
I'm sure there are other similar programs like that out there.
