Everytime windows vista updates automatically, it instantly reboots without
even asking if i have something to save, or giving me time to manually close
programs. It causes everything to shut down and reinitializes by itself. How
can I stop it?

Working with Vista for well over a year now I have never seen Vista
automatically reboot after a Windows Update. I would like to know what
setting you have changed to cause your copy to do so.

I have "install updates automatically" checked
and Windows reboots. It has to to allow updates that
need prerequisites in place to install... does it not?

It doesn't reboot until I exit the finished window. That is not automatic. I
have a choice to save what I am doing before I click on OK. Then the reboot
starts.

My PC definitely rebooted itself after the auto update at 3:30ish am
on 09/05/07. I'd left it on, as usual, while I slept but in the morning,
for the first time, I was confronted by the sign on screen and the patches
were on.

Do you have "install updates automatically" checked?

Yes I do. And, they are installed automatically (default setting at 3:00
am). I have never seen an automatic reboot. In fact, I would prefer that it
do so - at my choice. I can't seem to make it happen. It must be a system
setting somewhere that people change that I have not found. It could be
hardware interaction I suppose. I have my computer set to never sleep or
hibernate.

If the "install automatically" option requires manual intervention to
complete
the process wouldn't that be tantamount to making the
"download the updates but let me chose whether to install them"
option redundant?

ps. I have "Turn off display" set to 20 minutes
and "Put the computer to sleep" set to 1 hour.

I don't know how or why but that may
explain the difference between yours and mine. <Shrug>

Change your setting from automatically download and install update to notify me
when new updates are available or download and let me install.

You continue to prove what a ignorant klutz you truly are. Your entire
rational is you don't see it, therefore it couldn't happen.

ROTFLMAO!

Yours is the correct answer; it stops the auto-reboot
