Is there a way to disable or turn off the automatic language detection. I have a document that is in English. When I run spellcheck, midway through the document it'll switch to the French dictionary, since spellcheck thinks it's a French sentence, but it's not. So is there a way to tell it to only use the English dictionary?

In Word, click on Tools | Language | Set Language | uncheck the "Detect
language automatically" box.

Thanks for the reply. But the box is grayed out, but does not appear to be checked. Any particular reason that box is grayed out?

I think the box is grayed out when automatic language detection is
explicitly enabled/disabled in some styles but not in others.

Therefore it's disabled? It shouldn't be be autochecking for language? I checked the Office Tools when I went to add/remove Office 2000, and funny thing is the French spellcheck has been explicity disabled. Yet it still runs? Got any other suggestions?

Try this... Select the entire document. Click on Tools | Language |
Set Language | uncheck the "Detect language automatically" box. Does
that work?

I think you and "garfield" are off on a tangent, in this one. "garfield" is correct in
how to disable language autodetection, but that's not your problem, here.

From what you describe, this document has already been created in different languages.
Autodetect has done its work and now you have to deal with it. Ctrl+A to select all the
text, then go to tools/langauge/set language and choose the language you want to use when
spell check runs.
