I was wondering if there is a way to automatically fill in a form field with
FP when users click on an item they want to buy.
I.e. when the user clicks on the item for sale, it takes them through to the
form automatically (this part I can do), and a field is filled in
automatically on the form with the item they clicked on.

You can't do it in Frontpage without extensive hand-coding but that
functionality you describe is similar to the the primary feature of shopping
software applications - shopping carts - you select an item, click "add to
cart" and it adds it to the list..

So you need a shopping cart application. For a basic function use the Paypal
service which also offers a shopping cart (that is part of its service).

Otherwise, there are many shopping cart applications on the web, many of
which support frontpage and paypal.

The above is not exactly the way as you have explained it, but I expect it
is it the closest thing you will get.
