My 2003 Outlook used to automatically download emails when they were
received. But lately I have had to use the Send/Receive button to get my
emails. What happened? What can I do to go back to the previous method?

Did you set yourself to Offline on the File menu? Alternately did you change
any Send/Receive settings. I think they're here in OL2003: Tools menu >
Send/Receive > Send/Receive Settings
