Automatic Disk Check on Startup

I have Windows XP SP3. It shuts down properly everytime , however, lately on
50% of start ups, it says Windows needs to check the disk for consistency. I
usually let it run and there are no problems. I am wondering, I thought only
an improper shutdown would trigger this. Why would disk check be running on
so many startups? Thank you

Possibly your hard drive is failing. Do a diagnostic with a utility
downloaded from the drive mftr.'s website. You will create a bootable CD
with the file you download. You will need third-party burning software to
do this such as Roxio, Nero, or the free CDBurnerXP Pro. Burn as an image,
not as data.

http://www.cdburnerxp.se/

Boot with the CD you made and do a thorough test of the drive. If it fails
any physical tests, replace it.

Or you may have other hardware failing that is corrupting the operating
system. Flaky RAM will do this.

No, I'm not using NIS 2009. Does it have known issues such as this?

Thank you, I will do this immediately. I lost a disk a short while ago and
it is very frustrating.

On one of computers it does,
on all of the others it does not. I'm
currently working with Symantec
to find the cause.

My HD is WD. I ran the diagnostics as you said and everything was fine. No
errors. I will now try your link about the RAM. Thank you
