Windows XP home SP2 on an Asus mainboard (A7N8X-X), AMD Athlon 2400+,
Kingston memory 512MB, two harddisks on IDE1 (master and slave), CD
burner(CyberDrv CW088D) and DVD burner (Sony DVD RW DRU-700A) on IDE2
After I put the machine together it worked flawlessly for about two weeks.
Now without any changes on hardware or software the DVD isn't present any
more in the Windows Explorer and the mmc console (but it shows up during
boot time and in the BIOS as secondary master - exactly what it should be). I
checked the cables, the jumbers, the BIOS - all correct. The CD burner works
and shows up in the Explorer and mmc console.
Controlpanel shows that the DVD burner is deactivated and it is not possible
to reactivate it. (Windows is not able to activate this device).
What could the reason be for that?

Thanks for any answers, hints or comments

Check your system event log.
Also, try removing the DVD burner in device manager & letting plug & play
redetect it.
