Arg...

Ok, here is our basic setup:

My fiancee and I have two computers (one each). She has the 56kbps
modem for the Internet connection, and we are networked. Currently, we
are using Sygate Home Network to share this one connection. I am
running Windows2000, and she is running Windows98.

Now here's the problem:

My fiancee typically reads message boards and various other webpages,
rather low impact on bandwidth as a rule. Me, on the other hand, I
typically run high bandwidth operations such as the massive five CD
download I am currently hip deep in. Sygate works great for us when we
are only reading webpages, but when I get on a LONG download such as
this, she can't do a thing for the lag Sygate imposes on her. In other
words, Sygate gives me (the client) every scrap of bandwidth and
leaves her (the server) zilch. This leads to her ever angrier glances
at my monitor to see why she once again can't accomplish anything. I
get to feeling guilty, so I stop my download to allow her to load her
website. This takes a whopping fifteen seconds, give or take, and then
I am free to resume for a few minutes, and then I have to stop, then
start, then stop, then start. ARG!

What we oh so desperately need, is an Internet sharing program smart
enough to realize that the server op in a two machine network likes to
have an equal footing with that alloted the client. As an example,
let's say I am downloading, and she is reading an already loaded page.
My bandwidth should be 100% of the pipe. Now she attempts to load a
page, and for the duration she and I have 50% of the pipe each. For
whatever reason, I pause in my downloading, and now she has 100% of
the pipe.

I did download and install Sygate Office Network, which has bandwidth
management features, but it only attempts to balance bandwidth amongst
clients, and ignores the server's needs. I *can* set the maximum
bandwidth of the server to allow me only say 40kbps of the 56kbps
pipe, but that's a rediculously inefficient approach since it
restricts me to that 40kbps ALL THE TIME, and it's still not giving
her enough to ease her waiting times.

So, whew... Anyone know of a good ICS type program that will
dynamically adjust the bandwidth between client and server? I hate to
give up Sygate, as I have used it for years and am soooo cozy with it,
but this is a long time aggrivation and I am way past due to remedy
it.

A router for 56k dialup? I must be out of the loop I guess... Anyways,
what I really want is a software solution, no more hardware. Surely
someone must have made an ICS type package by now that will do this
simple thing.

Sure. They're not as common as routers for broadband, but I used one
for years before I switched to DSL.
